Castles, fortresses, defensive walls and other military constructions

These mute witnesses to a past marked by wars, conflicts and invasions are still standing proud today. Throughout its history, Spain has undergone a series of prolonged periods of instability due to its role as a meeting point between civilisations. This was the site of the start of the second Punic War, when Hannibal crossed the territory with his fearsome elephants in order to confront the power of Rome. Later, eight centuries of intermittent struggle pitted Christians against Muslims. This gave way to a period of rivalry with other European empires, and to a succession of wars with our neighbours. It is therefore hardly surprising that the design and engineering of military constructions reached a pinnacle of development in Spain.
