Route of the Al-Andalus Heritage

Routes which explore centuries of history in Andalusia

The Route of the Al-Andalus Heritage comprises a series of itineraries which invite you to discover Andalusia through the Muslim presence in the region between the 8th and 15th centuries. The route is recognised by the Council of Europe as a Major Cultural Route.

History, heritage, culture, traditions and flavours are all present on these itineraries covering almost 300 towns and villages all around Andalusia which all share a common link: their Al-Andalus heritage. These are often places situated well away from the usual tourist circuits, but that in their day were key points on the transport routes between the Kingdom of Granada and the rest of Andalusia, the Region of Murcia and Portugal.

All together these itineraries comprise an option for gentle cultural tourism which offers the chance to enjoy a unique heritage. Examples include the Alhambra in Granada, the Great Mosque of Cordoba, the Giralda tower in Seville, cities dating from the time of the Caliphate such as Medina Azahara (Cordoba), historic town centres with Arab origins such as Alcalá la Real (Jaén), through to vestiges of the Roman era such as the archaeological site of Baelo Claudia (Cadiz).

Below you will find more details about four of the itineraries that are part of the Route of the Al-Andalus Heritage. This is complemented with the Route of the Alpujarras (which links Almería with Granada), a tour around the city of Granada, and three itineraries dedicated to historical figures of Al-Andalus (Ibn al-Jatib, the last great multifaceted writer of Muslim Spain; Al-Idrisi, a mapmaker whose route is an invitation to discover the Al-Andalus of the 12th century; and Al-Mutamid, who was king of the “taifa” or dominion of Seville and whose route, from Portugal, is prolonged with the route of Washington Irving.
