The Way of El Cid

Following in the footsteps of El Cid Campeador

The Way of El Cid is a journey through locations linked to the legendary horseman Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid Campeador's life. Our travel guide will be the famous 12th-century Spanish poem narrating his tale, ‘The Poem of the Cid'. Following the trail set out in the book, we will head through the lands of Castile-León, Castile-La Mancha, Aragón and Valencia.

The route of El Cid runs from Vivar del Cid (Burgos), the popular knight's birthplace, to Orihuela (Alicante), a territory won from the Moors by El Cid. This literary-inspired journey also offers you the chance to uncover the rich culture, history and nature of much of Spain.

In all, the trail covers around 2,000 kilometres split into five sections, according to the different episodes narrated in ‘The Poem of the Cid'. Each section can be followed by road (in car or on a motorbike) or by trails (on foot or by bicycle).

There are also small thematic trails running off this main route. These are the circular rings”, which start and end in the same locationand the ‘branches', straight routes which run off the main trail for historical reasons. In this way, as well as the main route, there are a further three branches and five rings.
