This summer, why not set aside a few days to visit the Basque Country and enjoy good music? The Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival, San Sebastián Jazzaldia and Music Fortnight are a few of the events that you shouldn't miss. They offer the chance to have a unique experience and enjoy live music by important artists in various genres.

Vitoria, a city of jazz

In July, the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz holds its famous festival, which is the perfect chance to watch live performances by major stars of jazz music and up and coming young artists in the genre. However, music is not limited to concerts at the Vitoria Jazz Festival. You can also experience it on the street, with the good-time jazz of New Orleans bands that parade through the city, or by night, at improvised jam sessions at clubs.

Every night, in the early hours, these clubs offer you the chance to hear musicians who do not usually play together, making the most of the occasion to do so for sheer pleasure. Major figures like George Benson and Marcus Miller have taken part in these sessions, so it's no surprise that international critics say that in July the world's best after-hours jazz can be found in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Donostia-San Sebastián: jazz, opera and much more

Then we have the San Sebastián International Jazz Festival, which brings a festive atmosphere and many big names to the city of Donostia-San Sebastián. Plaza de la Trinidad square, the Kursaal and the other concert venues provide the perfect setting to enjoy the music.

The music carries on in August with the San Sebastián Music Fortnight, but in a different style. Its programme features opera, classical ballet, ancient music and symphony concerts. It is one of the oldest events of this kind in Europe and gathers major international musicians every year: the main festival venue is the modern Kursaal Auditorium, but concerts are also held in old churches and historic monuments, such as the Basilica of Santa María or the Miramar Palace.

Would you like to know more? Take note of the jazz and blues festivals that are held in the town of Getxo (very close to Bilbao), with programmes that offer the richness and diversity of both these genres.
