The Ichnite Route in Soria will take you on a journey back through time –specifically to 150 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the highlands of Soria in Castile-León. In this area, the footprints of these great creatures remained fossilised, leaving the imprints known as ichnites. Would you like to see them for yourself?

There are three Ichnite Routes in Soria, created so visitors can explore the numerous sites in the area (with a wide variety of ichnites left by dinosaurs, birds and flying reptiles). Two of them, the East and West routes, are designed to be done by car. There are another two routes which must be covered on foot as they are hard to access by car.

Both the East and West routes end (or begin, depending on the direction you take) in Villar del Río. There is an interesting Palaeontology Centre with a reconstruction of a life-size dinosaur nest, where children can uncover a 'dig' with dinosaur bones.

On the East Route you'll be able to see four sites.

If you start the route in Valles de Valdelalosa (in Valdelavilla), you'll find a large number of pterosaur ichnites (fossils of flying reptiles), as well as beautiful views of the Moncayo peak.

Four kilometres away, after going through various cobbled streets in the town of Matasejún, you'll come to the Las Adoberas site, where you'll be treated to spectacular scenery.

The next stop –the San Roque site– is some 10 kilometres away in Ventosa de San Pedro, and has a life-size replica of an Iguanodon.

And lastly, in the Fuentesalvo site (in Villar del Río, some 15 kilometres from Ventosa de San Pedro) there are several trails that appear to show the movement of several dinosaurs in groups.

On the West Route you'll be able to see six sites.

We recommend starting at the site of Salgar de Sillas. There is a trail of six ichnites left by a sauropod, which in some cases are over a metre long.

Then 15 kilometres away, you can visit the site of Los Tormos. You'll find an interesting replica of a Rhamphorhynchus.

The next stop is the site of Santa Cruz de Yanguas , which also has a replica of a Stegosaurus.

About six kilometres away, you'll find the site of Fuente Lacorte-El Frontal (in Bretún), with a spectacular life-size model of an Allosaurus, one of the dinosaurs that used to roam these lands of Soria some 150 million years ago.

The last two sites also belong to the town of Bretún: La Matecasa (with a replica of a Triceratops), and La Peña (with a very clear trail left by a theropod).

Both of the foot routes starting at the Villar del Río Palaeontology Centre lead to the sites of Valdegén (with theropod ichnites) and Serrantes (with theropod and bird ichnites).

Once you have become an expert in dinosaurs, we recommend that you make the most of your trip to Soria to go hiking (one of the best routes is the one that runs along the Cidacos River), visit the castles of Mangañas, Yanguas and San Pedro Manrique, and discover the examples of Romanesque art from the 12th and 13th centuries.
