"The Pórtico de la Gloria in the Cathedral of Santiago is once again shining in all its glory. ..."

The Pórtico de la Gloria in the Cathedral of Santiago is once again shining in all its glory. Following 10 years of restoration and conservation work, in which 12 specialists have participated, the polychromy of this European Romanesque masterpiece has been restored. From 27 July onwards, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the splendid results thanks to the programme of free visits that is being organised.

At the end of July, the Pórtico de la Gloria will be accessible again after a decade of restoration work. The recovery process has required an investment of 6.2 million euros, supported by the Cathedral Foundation and the Barrié Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of Culture of the Galician Regional Government and the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute (IPCE).

The programme of visits to the Pórtico de la Gloria is scheduled to begin on 27 July, from 8am to 10pm. The visits will be free of charge and will be organised for groups of a maximum of 25 people. Before entering the Portico area, the public will be able to watch a video on the artistic value, history and restoration of this key European Romanesque work, as well as the importance of its conservation.

First phase of visits

Access will be from Obradoiro square, up the main staircase. Visitors will enter in order of arrival, and will not be able to book in advance. Visits may be interrupted during the liturgical ceremonies held in the basilica, and for reasons of conservation, under certain weather conditions (high humidity or excessive heat).

This first phase of visits will last until the autumn of 2018, when several restoration works will be carried out inside the Cathedral of Santiago, which will require the Portico to be “encapsulated”, to prevent it from being affected by dust. Following this, the new visiting conditions will be established.
