"The Pórtico de la Gloria in the Cathedral of Santiago is once again shining in all its glory. ..."

The Pórtico de la Gloria in the Cathedral of Santiago is once again shining in all its glory. Following 10 years of restoration and conservation work, in which 12 specialists have participated, the polychromy of this European Romanesque masterpiece has been restored. In July 2018 the programme of visits starts, which will allow visitors to enjoy the splendid result achieved.

After a decade of restoration work, the Pórtico de la Gloria can again be seen. The recovery process has required an investment of 6.2 million euros, supported by the Cathedral Foundation and the Barrié Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of Culture of the Galician Regional Government and the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute (IPCE).

The programme of visits to the Pórtico de la Gloria aims to teach visitors about the artistic value of this key piece from the European Romanesque period, and explain its history and the restoration process, as well as the importance of its conservation. During a first phase, from 27 July to 18 September 2018, visits will be free, although they won't be able to be booked in advance. Entrance will be open from the monumental staircase on the Plaza del Obradoiro square on a first come, first served basis.

Guided tours

Then, in autumn of 2018, restoration work will be carried out inside the Cathedral of Santiago, which will require the Portico to be “encapsulated”, to prevent it from being affected by dust. After this, there will be a second phase of visits, expected to begin in November 2018.

During this second phase, access to the Portico will be part of the Cathedral Museum's programme of guided tours. These will be in groups of maximum 25 people, will last 45 minutes and will be available in Spanish, English and Galician.

The entrance will be at the Pazo de Xelmírez, on the Plaza del Obradoiro square, and tickets can be bought in advance at the museum’s ticket office or on the cathedral's website (www.catedraldesantiago.es). It will also be possible to buy tickets on the day at the museum’s ticket office, as long as they are not sold out.
