In 2018, after ten years of restoration work, the true colours of Santiago Cathedral’s Pórtico da Gloria were revealed. This extraordinary conservation project involved 12 specialists who recovered the original polychroming of this Romanesque masterpiece, and won the Europa Nostra 2019 European Heritage Award. The splendid results can now be enjoyed in scheduled tours organised by Santiago Cathedral.

After a decade of restoration, we can once again see the magnificent Pórtico da Gloria by Master Mateo. The restoration process, funded by the Cathedral Foundation and the Barrié Foundation in partnership with the Culture Department of Xunta de Galicia and the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute (IPCE), required an investment of 6.2 million euros and earned international recognition in the form of the European Heritage / Europa Nostra 2019 award.

The scheduled tours of the Pórtico da Gloria present the artistic value of this key work of the Romanesque period, explaining its history, the restoration process, and the importance of its conservation. This visit system allows access to the space while applying preventive measures to ensure its conservation and protection.
