Night falls, the lights go out, and thousands of candles illuminate streets, balconies and courtyards, creating a magical setting in which to enjoy music. The sensation is something you can experience in spring and summer, in various locations in Spain. The Candlelight Concerts of Pedraza are the best-known, although there are candlelit festivals and night-time events in other Spanish towns.

Candlelight Nights

Pedraza, a village in Segovia, is even more beautiful on the first and second Saturday of every July, when it holds its Candlelight Concerts. Lit only by thousands of candles, it becomes a spectacular setting for a concert of classical music. Just watching the preparations for the event, or strolling around the streets with the music in the background, is a special experience.

One of the famous white villages of Cádiz, Vejer de la Frontera, also holds Candlelight Nights. In the early June evenings, hundreds of candles light up the old town centre until dawn. Take a relaxed stroll through the village streets, following the recommended route, to arrive at the concert in Plaza de España.

Another place that has held candlelight nights for several years is Rodalquilar (Almería). This village in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park usually organises these evenings in the second half of August, with theatre, dance, and music.

Night Festivals

On the outskirts of Brihuega (Guadalajara) there are large fields of lavender. Every July, when they bloom, the plants are harvested and the town holds its Lavender Festival. The public wear white and go out into the fields of flowers to enjoy the twilight and the performances of the musical guests. At night, there is also the option of a picnic buffet dinner.

Another event takes us south to Segura de la Sierra (Jaén), which claims to be “the world’s quietest village”. This lovely village of narrow streets and whitewashed houses is 1,200 metres above sea level in Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park. As well as visiting its Arab castle or admiring the fabulous view from its lookout point, in May you can attend the Segura Music Festival, which attracts Spanish and international artists in different musical genres. The concerts are held in the day and at night, in unique settings like the Jesuit church, the Arab Baths, or the Jorge Manrique viewing point.
