Cervantes Institute is a reference around the world for people who are interested in knowing about and learning Spanish, a language spoken by more than 400 million speakers and an official language in 21 countries. With more than 87 centres around 44 countries in five continents, more and more students sign up every year.

Cervantes Institute is a public institution established in 1991, with the aim of fostering Spanish language teaching, as well as promoting Spanish and Latin American culture. It carries out these functions through its network of centres all over the world. It also has central offices in Madrid and Alcalá de Henares, the town where the writer Miguel de Cervantes was born.

Its teaching programme includes a wide range of online courses and courses in the schools situated in other countries, both for Spanish and Spain's co-official languages. The courses are adapted specifically to each area and country, taking into account the languages and sociocultural peculiarities. In the field of teaching, it also gives training courses aimed at teachers and teaching professionals.

Another important function is the language level accreditation - it is the organisation in charge of awarding the Diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE), the official title that certifies the level of command of Spanish. Cervantes Institute also organises examinations to gain this diploma and offers preparation courses in person and via the internet.

As a promoter of culture in Spanish, the Institute also provides support to the work of Hispanists, with a library and documentation services available in the centres and activities and cultural events in collaboration with other Spanish organisations and with the entities of the many countries where there are branches.
