Enjoying a concert in an outstanding natural area, attending a recital in a Renaissance palace, seeing a show in such emblematic spots as the Alhambra in Granada, taking classes from some of the top names in a particular field, or having fun in an improvised session at a nightclub are just a few of the options available at the numerous music festivals held around Spain with the arrival of summer.

These well-established events are famous all over the world and feature a wide range of styles. They attract large numbers of music fans who gather to hear first-rate music, as well as some of the most representative artists on the international music scene. Although music performances are the main focus at these events, the programme usually includes parallel activities where festival-goers and fans take centre stage: everything from practical workshops to lectures, talks, seminars and themed courses.

These festivals take place all over Spain in large cities as well as by the beach, in the mountains and in more tranquil settings. The pleasant summer temperatures mean that many performances are held outdoors, and the venue is frequently just as interesting as the event itself: emblematic locations, monuments and historical buildings often form a spectacular backdrop to these events.

Whatever your taste in music, you're guaranteed to be able to indulge it in Spain. The Santander International Festival and the Granada Festival are just a couple of the unmissable events for classical music lovers. Jazz fans will not want to miss, amongst other events, the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival and Jazzaldía in San Sebastián; flamenco enthusiasts will love the Cante de las Minas International Festival and the Cordoba Guitar Festival. Pop, rock, new trends and alternative styles are the stars at massive events such as Sónar and FIB, whilst world music and folk have their space at festivals such as the Pyrenees Folk Festival, Etnosur, Grec, La Mar de Músicas and the Ortigueira Celtic Festival.

These are just a few of the musical events held up and down the country, and which offer a great opportunity to make the most of your stay in Spain. Come and see for yourself.
