UNESCO World Heritage sites. The place that witnessed the first words ever written in Spanish. Monumental buildings. The monasteries of Suso and Yuso in San Millán de la Cogolla (La Rioja) offer the chance to enjoy all this. Now a visit to these monasteries can also be a fun experience for the whole family thanks the programme of activities entitled "Emilianensis. Discover the monasteries of La Rioja", devised by the San Millán de la Cogolla Foundation.

You can enjoy one or several days, and experience a different way to learn about the heritage and nature of the valley of San Millán de la Cogolla, in the region of La Rioja. This is the idea behind the cultural programme "Emilianensis. Discover the monasteries of La Rioja", organised by the San Millán de la Cogolla Foundation.

Designed particularly for families, groups and schools, this is a series of educational and recreational activities which revolve around the history, art and way of life in the monasteries of Yuso and Suso. The visit to these monuments with the UNESCO World Heritage designation is now a new and different experience thanks to this project.

Europa Nostra Award

The origin of this initiative was the Educational Classroom project which was developed during the time of the restoration work on the church in the Yuso Monastery, which in 2011 was awarded the Europa Nostra award by the European Union in the category of "education, training and awareness-raising". The purpose of the Classroom was to raise social awareness and involvement among young people about the conservation and dissemination of cultural heritage. Its success led to the broadening of its objectives and content until it evolved into the new programme entitled "Emilianensis".

Family workshops

In addition to visiting the monastery, you'll have the opportunity to transform yourself into an ancient monastic scribe from mediaeval times by taking part in the calligraphy and illustration workshops; experiment with models in the architecture workshop to discover the basic elements of the construction of the Yuso Monastery; learn how craftsmen worked with stone, wood, iron and glass. There are also guided itineraries to explore the cave where the saint lived, and the natural attractions of this site, whose resources supplied the monasteries for many centuries.

In order to take part in the various activities it is necessary to sign up at the web page www.emilianensis.com, which also offers full information on dates and times, accommodation, restaurants and points of interest to visit in the area.

Special activities in 2018

2018 is the European Year of Cultural Heritage and within the Emilianensis project we are also organising a series of special cultural activities. For example, on the International Day for Monuments and Sites in April, dramatized tours were organised at the Cañas Abbey, as well as an organ and soprano concert at the church in the Yuso Monastery. In May, to commemorate International Museum Day, there were micro-performances at the Suso Monastery and a guitar and plucked string instrument concert at Yuso.

During the summer, the summer school programme for Fine Arts students from The Complutense University of Madrid will take place, and there will be a practical course from July 4 to 6 on Heritage Education aimed at teachers, educators and cultural heritage managers. Then, from October on, activities will also begin to celebrate the European Heritage Days.
