" Music improves the heartbeat and reduces anxiety. The creative process triggers expressive and communicative capacities. ..."

Music improves the heartbeat and reduces anxiety. The creative process triggers expressive and communicative capacities. And everyone's seen how a comedy show can release tension and alter people's state of mind. Theatre, music and painting are instruments that can lead to improved health and a more rapid recovery. Here we present several initiatives that highlight the therapeutic potential of culture.

The beneficial effects of the various cultural manifestations on people's health and quality of life has meant that a number of hospitals, health centres and institutions have incorporated artistic programmes into their daily routine. The aim is to help alleviate the circumstances of patients, families and care professionals, and encourage a speedier return to health. These initiatives bring cultural experiences within reach of everyone, and generate new performance spaces for artists. Would you like to find out more?

"Música en Vena" (Music in the veins)

An example of music therapy is the concert series in hospitals in Madrid organised by the National Centre for Music Dissemination and the non-profit organisation Música en Vena (MeV). This event offers altruistic recitals in four hospitals in the Madrid region from 26 October to 10 June, 2015. For two years now, MeV has transformed the rooms and halls of the hospital into venues where everyone can enjoy performances of music, dance, mime, magic…

"Doctores sonrisa" (Smile doctors)

Within the performing arts we find the programme entitled "Doctores Sonrisa" run by the Theodora Foundation, which has been present in Spain since 2000. Every week a team of 30 artists –including magicians, clowns, storytellers and actors– visit children in some 20 hospitals throughout the country, where they create spaces for the imagination to fly, and try to make their stay more humane and agreeable.

"Empower Parents": open museums

Museums are among the most active participants in the field of art therapy and accessibility. Particularly worth mentioning among these experiences is a project entitled "Empower Parents", promoted by the ICO Foundation and the Hablarenarte platform: these are workshops that invite the participation of families of children with autism, along with teachers and other professionals, who are given tools and materials to normalise their children's visits to museums and other cultural spaces.

This activity currently takes place two Saturdays a month in the ICO Museum in Madrid. In 2015 it also travelled to the Science Museum in Valladolid, and there are plans for a reprise in the Costume Museum and the Telefónica Foundation. This initiative is the result of a collaboration between the ICO Museum and the Queens Museum in New York, and in 2013 was recognised with the "Museums Connect" award from the American Alliance of Museums.

These are only three examples of the programmes available today. But thanks to the work of foundations, associations and institutions, this type of cultural actions are becoming ever more frequent.
