Venues that are culturally enriching in every way. With this idea in mind, many museums, libraries and national archives have been built and refurbished over the past few years. The result: venues that facilitate knowledge and help citizens to discover art and culture, in attractive settings with beautiful architecture.

By refurbishing these historical buildings, contemporary architecture serves culture, providing venues that aim to combine monuments, modernity and functionality. National archives, libraries and museums have been the main objects of this architectural activity.

Simple and efficient architecture

Ingenious solutions to make the most of natural sunlight, innovative materials that are flexible and multipurpose, modern structures that do not clash with the style of the sites... The refurbishment of these buildings is an important task that also involves a double benefit to citizens: on one hand, to improve the quality and efficiency of cultural institutions; and on the other, to conserve Spain's vast heritage.

Not only have palaces and buildings been refurbished, but new and impressive avant-garde venues have been built. It comes as no surprise that many of these projects have been designed by some of the most prestigious Spanish architects.

Projects in museums

The fabulous extensions to the Reina Sofía National Art Museum and the Prado Museum, designed by Rafael Moneo and Jean Nouvel respectively, are two great examples. Without losing their essence, these museums have renovated their image and ability to attract visitors. There are also other projects that are still under way, such as the National Archaeological Museum.

These are not the only ones: We can also find many important refurbishment projects in El Greco Museum, Museum of Underwater Archaeology in Cartagena, Altamira Research Centre, Museum of Roman Art in Mérida and the extension to the College of San Gregorio in Valladolid, amongst others.

Historical archives and national libraries

Historical archives are also being renovated. For example, the Archives of the Kingdom of Aragon boast a new main building in the Virreyes Palace, right in the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona. Other ones, like the archives of Guadalajara, Lleida, Zamora and Santa Cruz de Tenerife all have new buildings, in a modern style that blends perfectly into their historical environments, as an attractive addition to the areas in which they are situated.

National public libraries are also undergoing the same process. The renovation of the Casa de las Conchas house in Salamanca is one of the main projects. However, there are many more: the library buildings in Cordoba, Girona, Murcia, Orihuela, Santiago de Compostela and Seville, to mention but a few.

These are the new cultural venues: attractive and functional buildings, created by and for culture, and a veritable display of contemporary architecture.
