Every July you have a date with the performing arts, literature and music you won’t want to miss. Where? Almagro. A heritage city and official historic and artistic site, which every summer revolves around its International Classical Theatre Festival.
Almagro is just 25 kilometres from Ciudad Real and 200 from Madrid, in the heart of the Region of Castilla-La Mancha. The place where this event is held is now an important centre of Spanish culture. In summer, some of the most iconic spots in Almagro, such as the 17th-century Corral de Comedias theatre, are the setting for works by universal playwrights like Miguel de Cervantes, Shakespeare and Molière.
Immortal stories from the 16th and 17th centuries and the Spanish Golden Age, such as The Canterbury Tales, The Learned Ladies, and Fuenteovejuna, are brought to life again in restored palaces, courtyards, cloisters and monasteries. The town’s heritage buildings can be seen at their best throughout these days in July.
An inclusive festival for everyone
The festival is not just for fans of Golden Age theatre. The programme includes all sorts of activities, with something for everyone. The International Baroque Children’s Contest, which was created in 2012 to make classical theatre easier for children to understand and enjoy, presenting it in a playful way, with accessible language. As well as plays for children and families, there are street performances, exhibitions, seminars and courses, conferences, concerts, workshops, film seasons and more.
his is a cultural experience for all - in fact, Almagro’s International Classical Theatre Festival won the 2018 Reina Letizia Inclusive Culture Award. For example, the most important shows on the programme are accessible for hearing-impaired and visually impaired people, and all the theatrical spaces in the festival are adapted for people with reduced mobility, and there are inclusive workshops for children. So every summer, this great celebration invites everyone to experience the magic of classical theatre.
