The Second World War has ended and while she waits for her husband to return from the front, Grace lives with her two sons in a large house on the island of Jersey. The house is in constant semi-darkness, as the children have a rare illness that does not permit them to be exposed to direct sunlight. When three new servants come to the house, the strict order maintained until then is broken.
