Fermín works in the wine cellars of the Dupont family in Jerez, in conditions of poverty and feudal exploitation. His godson, Rafael, wounded in a smuggling operation, is being cared for by Fermín’s daughter, María Luz. They fall in love and are engaged. In a bout of partying excess, the man of the gentry, Don Luis, tries to seduce María Luz in front of Rafael, who in his turn is being pursued by Don Luis’s cousin Lola, “the little marchioness”. During the harvest celebration, Don Luis finally rapes María Luz who, ashamed, decides to leave Rafael without giving any explanation.
