The ambassador of Miranda and the Thévenot married couple go for dinner at the house of the Sénechal family. However, the hosts have forgotten about the arrangement and decide to go out for dinner at a restaurant. Once there, they also find that they have to go without dinner, because the owner of the restaurant has died. From this moment, each time the group of bourgeois friends tries to meet, something extraordinary happens, sometimes in reality and sometimes imagined by one of the characters, to prevent the meeting from taking place.
