Based on the short novel by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, this is a film noir treatment of a story of fantasy and obsession.

In the 19th century, a judge called Joaquín falls in love with Blanca, a young girl from a village in Castile. However, Joaquín is moved to work elsewhere and loses contact with her. Some time later, they meet again and start a new relationship. At this time, the judge is investigating the mystery of a skull that has appeared with a nail embedded in it. All of the clues point to Blanca as the prime suspect.
