This adaptation of the work by Carlos Arniches was the film debut of director, Luis Marquina.

Jealousy and false appearances lead Quintín to throw out his wife Felisa, who is pregnant. Felisa has no money and gives birth, in a charity home, to a girl called Teresa, who is left in the care of a poor family. As time goes by, Don Quintín becomes bitter, and gets the nickname of “el amargao” (“embittered”) for his bad character. Meanwhile, his daughter receives a suitor.
