The film depicts the darkly reactionary side of Spain in a period of history. At the end of the 19th century, two civil guards are entrusted with transferring a dangerous criminal from the city of León, where he has been captured, to Vitoria, where he is to stand trial. They have to make the journey on foot, without any relief, through an area of difficult terrain. One of them is an agent of the old school and the other is a novice, recently out of the academy.
