This life-affirming comedy, set in the days prior to the proclamation of the Second Republic in Spain, won, among other awards, the Oscar for the best foreign film.
 

Fernando, an ex-seminarian and a deserter, hides in the house of Manolo, an old, open-minded painter, and they becomes friends. On the day Fernando is to leave, Manolo’s four daughters arrive in Madrid to spend a few days with their father. When Fernando sees them at the train station, he changes his mind and decides to stay. In the days that follow, Fernando will succumb to each girl’s charms.
