This is one of the youthful works of Victorio Macho, and was created in order to obtain a grant to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.
Although ultimately it failed to win him the grant, the work is noteworthy for the tension, rhythm and sensuality the sculptor manages to convey, in an artistic style which goes beyond the prevailing realism of the time. Victorio Macho said of it: 'it is a gypsy dancing… I took away the head, the arms, the legs: I had no need of them, only the torso… but look closely, and you will see music and rhythm in every muscle…'.
Works of this type, depicted with a high degree of idealisation and symbolism, were responsible for ensuring the recognition of his talent as a sculptor.
