Retrato de Asensio Julià

Goya's technical skill is evident in both the arrangement of the figure and the loose brushstrokes in this work, which can be seen as a forerunner of the Romantic movement.

The subject of the portrait has been identified as the Valencian painter Asensio Julià, thanks to the inscription in the lower left hand corner which reads: "Goya to his friend Asensi". The subject is shown against a backdrop of scaffolding and beams, and surrounded by various objects related with painting.

Asensio Julià worked with Goya on the frescoes in the shrine of San Antonio de la Florida (Madrid) around the time this portrait was painted.
