Original title

Caballos de carreras en un paisaje

This work is in the tradition of the outdoor horseracing scenes originating in England in the late 18th century.

A group of jockeys dressed for the occasion prepare for a race in the countryside against an imposing backdrop of mountains illuminated by the evening sun. It is based on a similar scene painted outdoors by Degas himself in 1884. In contrast to the earlier work, Degas here moves away from a literal rendering of the scene and gives free rein to his skills as a colourist, possibly influenced by the example of Paul Gauguin –whose painting The Moon and the Earth Degas had bought in 1893– and his own experience in producing colour monotypes.
