Cultural background

Original title

Bodegón con cuenco chino, copa nautilo y otros objetos

This superb still life is a compendium of the work of the artist and exemplifies some of the most outstanding elements of his style.

The work is an example of the genre which became a style in its own right and obtained great popularity in the 17th century. The luxurious objects depicted (the Chinese Ming bowl, the crystal wine glass with its filigree lid and the Persian carpet) appear in many of Kalf's paintings. The play of light highlights the objects by means of glints and reflections which are a hallmark of this painter.

This work was crucial to establishing the chronology of the paintings by this artist, as it is one of the few which he signed and dated.
