Edgar Degas

Impressionism

Original title

Bailarina basculando (Bailarina verde)

With this work Degas introduces spectators into the world of the ballet which held such fascination for him.

Only one of the girls is shown full length, while the rest are cropped and their faces left to the imagination of the viewer. Degas' creation of an off-centre, truncated pictorial space is influenced by photography and Japanese prints. He considered that the transitory and incomplete nature of reality could only be captured in a fragmentary manner. The fleeting character of movement is conveyed by means of rapid pastel strokes which the painter applies with enormous skill.
