Painted in 1907 during Sorolla’s stay at La Granja de San Ildefonso, it shows the painter’s interest in gardens and offers instantaneity as if it were a photograph.
It shows his smallest daughter skipping rope alongside other children around a fountain in one of the gardens at the Royal Palace in Segovia. During his stay at La Granja, Sorolla used the garden as a backdrop to the compositions or as the true protagonist of his paintings.
The work’s instantaneity is achieved through the movement of all the figures which has been captured in a moment. The composition itself and the figures running around the pond contribute to this sensation of time standing still. His daughter stands out in the foreground, captured in full jump, as shown in the shadow on the ground and the barely visible rope. The lighting, with sunlight filtering through the plants, and the vague features accentuate the impression of a fleeting vision.
