This is one of the best conserved works by this artist from Seville, who was the court sculptor to two kings of Spain. This is a precursor of the nativity scenes that were to become popular throughout the 18th century.

This small and intimate sculpture group forms a pair with another representing the birth of the Virgin, and shows the artist’s expert mastery of the technique in its profusion of small details. It is a good example of what became La Roldana’s hallmark style after she joined the Court and was named official sculptress to Charles II in 1692.

The characters are shown in a tender tableau, in which Saint Joseph is no longer depicted as a mere spectator but takes a prominent role, and the Virgin is represented as a young mother with a serene and joyous expression.
