This is the work of the sculptor Zenon of Aphrodisias, the creator of the most important theatre in the Roman Empire at Aspendos. It is remarkable for the fine work made using the damp cloth technique overlaid with fabric on the model.

The author signed this work with Greek letters on the base on which the figure stands; this establishes it as dating from the Roman era within the scope of the works which took place to the east of the Empire, and particularly in the 2nd century A.D.

It comes from the archaeological excavations in the gardens of the Palace of the Dukes of Medinaceli in Cogolludo, where in the 16th or 17th century it may have formed part of the garden’s decorative elements in the style of the Italian Renaissance gardens, possibly as a collector’s item.
