Original title

Espada de antenas atrofiadas
Guadalajara Museum
Guadalajara, Castile-La Mancha

This is one of the weapons recovered from the Celtiberian necropolises located in Guadalajara, and furnish key elements for the study of the Iron Age on the central plateau.

These swords have two antennae ending in spheres which almost meet, a rounded pommel, niello with silver threads, a straight guard and a blade with grooves in the centre, and are the oldest models from the Iron Age on the plateau. Most of them were found in the Alto Duero-Alto Tajo region (Soria-Guadalajara) and dated between the 5th and 4th centuries B.C.

The excavations in the Celtiberian necropolis of Prados Redondos in Sigüenza provided numerous collections of weapons, including swords and objects typical of a warrior’s impedimenta, together with the ashes of the deceased deposited in an urn.

Details of the work

Length: 58 cm; Width of blade: 6.5 cm.

Wrought iron; niello
