Cultural background

Original title

Ataifor de la Nao
Malaga Museum
Malaga, Andalusia

Bowl with a marine decoration. These images were very rare in Hispanic-Moorish art.

The circumference of the Nasrid ataifor was used to aid in the composition of the drawing of this round bottomed vessel. Using metallic gold and blue hues, a vessel with two wind filled sails was produced. In this way, a certain feeling of movement in the sailing scene was obtained, while four fish complete the depiction of the sea surroundings. These images are not so rare in gold-coloured china; this technique was used on luxury pottery which from the 13th century was exported from Al-Andalus throughout the Mediterranean and Europe.
