The Holy Trinity

This is one of El Greco’s first commissions in Toledo, and perfectly combines the concepts of drawing and colour.

Based on an engraving by Albrecht Dürer, this scene in which the Eternal Father (with an oriental mitre) gathers up the body of Christ, features an outstanding use of colour in the drapes, linking it to the techniques of Tintoretto. Echoes of Michelangelo can also be seen in Jesus’ vigorous anatomy. The work was painted for the attic of the altarpiece on the high altar of the church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo, and commissioned by Diego de Castilla, Dean of Toledo. It was acquired in 1832 by Ferdinand VII from the sculptor Valeriano Salvatierra.
