This is an excellent example of Velázquez's mastery of the whole range of pictorial resources, including aerial perspective.

Unlike other paintings on contemporary history, Velázquez focuses attention on the foreground and the beginnings of peace, and relegates the battle scene to the background. It is worth noting the skill with which the artist portrays the atmosphere, light and the landscape, as well as his talent for portraiture.

The work was intended as a work of political propaganda and emphasises the clemency of the Spanish monarch. The painting depicts the moment that Ambrosio Spínola, the Genovese general of the Spanish troops, graciously receives the keys of the city from the Dutch governor, Justin of Nassau. The raised lances symbolise the pride of victory.
