This work, completely devised by Velázquez, involves praise for the artistic profession. It takes painting to the level of poetry and music and distances it from artisan practice.

Apollo enters into the forge of Vulcan to warn him about his wife’s adultery, Venus goddess of beauty, with Mars, the god of war. Apollo, god of poetry and music, represents the superiority of the Arts over Crafts, symbolised by Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and patron of blacksmiths.

The references to Greco-Roman statuary in the treatment of the nudes and to classical Italian Baroque stand out in this work. The composition, albeit modified, is based on an engraving by Antonio Tempesta.

This canvas was bought by Philip IV in 1634, being listed in the 1701 inventory of the Buen Retiro Palace, and in the 1772 and 1794 inventories of the Royal Palace in Madrid.
