This is one of the great works of Goya, and in this portrait of the family of King Charles IV he demonstrates all his skill and subtlety when portraying each individual subject.

This complex composition was painted between Aranjuez and Madrid shortly before Goya was appointed painter to the court, and its precursors are the “Portrait of Philip V with his family” by Louis-Michel van Loo and “Las Meninas” by Velázquez.

Going beyond the level of the portrait itself, the attitudes and placement of the subjects reveal the painter's skilful perception of the psychology and power plays of the protagonists. Other features worth noting are the design of the costumes (the latest fashions), jewels and ceremonial decorations. This work was displayed in 1814 in the Royal Palace in Madrid and in 1824 became part of the collections of the Prado Museum.
