A work by El Greco which was the central piece of the altarpiece in the church of Doña María de Aragón school (Madrid).

It shows the passage of the New Testament (Luke 1, 26-38) which narrates the annunciation of the Virgin’s maternity by the Archangel Gabriel.

The burning bush symbolises Mary’s virginity and purity which, without burning out, appeared to Moses on Mount Tabor. There is a sewing basket to the left, an allusion to the Temple veil sewed by Mary according to the Armenian Gospel of Infancy. The musical angels appear as joyful witnesses of the scene.

There are two signed reductions or possible sketches of this painting. One is in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the other is in the Fine Arts Museum in Bilbao.
