Possibly an allegory of sexual desire. It may also be inspired by a classical work used frequently in the period, namely Pliny the Elder's Natural History.

The mischievous young man and the monkey complicate the typical subject of a man blowing on burning embers, already used by El Greco in Italy, transforming it into a suggestive, enigmatic scene of daily life.

The interest in lighting effects and the importance of colour show the influence of Bassano, whom El Greco would have known in Venice
