This is one of Sorolla’s characteristic light-filled scenes in the style which made this artist so popular.

In this painting, Sorolla uses two of his favourite themes which he depicted on numerous occasions: children and the beach. His skilful analysis of colour is another characteristic feature of his outdoor paintings, and in this example it is particularly worth noting the shades used for the sunlight, the sea, and the fair hair of the boy in the centre of the composition, where the colour merges with the warm sand. The long brushstrokes endow the painting with great expressiveness, another hallmark of this artist known as “the painter of light”.
