This is one of the most elegant still lifes of this period from the painter.

Juan van der Hamen was the main still life painter in the court in the early decades of the 17th century. In this still life, he mixes fruit, flowers and vessels in different planes, masterfully combining the taste for detailed description of objects (typical of the genre’s beginnings in Spain) with artificial composition.

The shapes, highlights and textures of the earthenware and glass vessels emphasize the richness and delicacy of the piece as a whole. In the artist's career, this work represents a point of perfect balance between the compositional sobriety of his first still lifes and the colourful crowdedness of his later works.
