Dürer painted himself elegantly to show off his social status and move away from the status of artisan which is what painters were considered then.

He has painted the top half of his body in a refined pose, with light tones and a low-cut neckline, giving him a Renaissance look. The choice of aristocratic clothes and the severe direct look, haughty and serene, show that the painter wanted to give distinction to his profession.

The rich details and bright colours, with golden hues, stand out, as well as the impeccably accurate drawing.

The words in German written on the window ledge prove that he was satisfied with his own artistic ability: "1498, I painted it according to my figure. I was twenty-six years old Albrecht Dürer".

It was purchased for Philip IV at the auction by Charles I of England.
