Self-portrait of Titian wearing the Golden Chain of Knighthood, awarded by the Emperor Charles V. The portrait used to belong to Rubens.

Titian has a pen in his right hand which refers to his status as a painter, for which he had been recognised many times. The light brings out the most important details of the composition on the black background and with black clothing. These details are the face, the hand and the chain. Because the figure is facing sideways, it highlights the feeling of volume and the expression on his face.

Titian was really concerned about his image and he painted several self-portraits, two of which are preserved and the one in the Prado Museum is the later one. In the portrait he is 73-75 years old.
