It is remarkable for its simplicity, the sensation of quietude it transmits and the astonishing naturalism of the image. It belongs to the period of Zurbarán’s artistic maturity.
This is a devotional image which was widely known in 17th-century Spain. It portrays an Agnus Dei, the “lamb of God” which refers to the sacrifice of Christ’s dying to save mankind.
Zurbarán painted six versions of this subject, with minor iconographic variations, which demonstrates its relative success among his private clientele. This is the best version.
