This is one of El Greco’s most important later works.

In this piece the artist wanted to create a symbol of resurrection and eternity which would accompany his remains, as this work was intended for what was to be the family pantheon in the convent church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo. He is thought to have chosen this episode because of the meaning of his last name (Theotocopoulus); Theotokos is the Greek word for Mother of God. The shepherd in the foreground is probably a self-portrait.
