Masterpiece of Rubens, the most important Flemish school painter in the 17th century, and which stands out because of its magnificent Baroque details and its lively and theatrical nature.

The loose, long and vibrant brushstrokes depict Baby Jesus playing with the gifts from the Magi and their entourage, and there are vigorous figures with an intense use of light. Because this artist trained in Italy, we can also see the influence of Michelangelo and the colossal figures, the exaltation of Venetian colour, the subtle atmosphere of Titian and a slight Mannerist look with the elongated figures.

The painting was commissioned in 1609 by the Antwerp Town Council. Later on it was given to the ambassador Rodrigo Calderón, who sent it to Spain. Once in Spain, Rubens extended the work and included the angels at the top and his own self-portrait on a horse on the right.
