In 1900, the monument received the Sculpture Medal of Honor from the Paris Universal Exhibition.
Its figures symbolize Music, Harmony, Melody, and Fame. The first one corresponds with the women with the lute that hides her face on one side. Then, Harmony and Melody rest in an unstable fashion on the concrete of the sepulcher. Finally, Fame leans towards the coffin as if trying to hear the last note from the voice of the tenor that has been muted for eternity.
The set is inspired by a drawing published in 1890 by the magazine “La ilustración ibérica”, which illustrated the death of the tenor Julián Gayarre with a woman crying inconsolably on top of his grave.
