A watercolour publicising the work on two occasions, it shows Picasso’s links to the theatre world.
The work belongs to when Picasso was most attached to the theatre world, between 1917 and 1924. It is the design for the costume of one of the main characters in the work – the Chinese conjurer. It was the poster for “Parade” at the Théatre de Champs Elysées in 1917 and at the Théatre Lyrique Municipal de Gaieté in Paris in 1923.
This was the first time Picasso had collaborated with Diaghilev on a piece. Later, the duo frequently worked together, leading to shows where dance shared top-billing with the plastic arts in the avant-garde first quarter of the 20th century.
