Picasso dedicated this piece “to the ceramics museum in Valencia”.
Picasso began using ceramic as a means of artistic expression after the 2nd World War when he took up residence in Vallauris in 1946, an area with a long pottery-making tradition in the South of France. He collaborated with the Madoura pottery workshop, particularly with Suzanne Ramié, in the production of ceramics, and was attracted by the ancestral nature and historical connotations of this material. The goat motif is repeated frequently in his work and was used to suggest mischief and sexual prowess.
