Original title

Botella

This Venetian glass bottle may have been made in Majorca by Venetian glaziers who settled in the island, in spite of the ban on producing these bottles outside the Italian Republic.

This two-handled bottle is shaped like a flattened ovoid and enamelled with dark and gold amethyst. On each side it has a portrait framed by a medallion. The rest of the bottle is decorated with gold latticework, with beads of enamel at the intersections. The shoulder and the neck have a Kufic inscription (ancient script used by early Muslims).

It may have been produced in Venice for the market of Spain's Levante region, or in Majorca by Venetian glaziers.
