This unique piece was found in what was known as the Aula Sacra, in the peristyle of the Roman Theatre in Mérida.

It was probably part of a series of imperial portraits dedicated to the cult of the Emperor. This is a representation of the Emperor Augustus with a veil over his head which shows him as Pontifex Maximus, the maximum religious authority. This work, carved out of Carrara marble, is thought to have been an import.
