The pictorial realism of the young Velázquez.

The saint is depicted seated with a halo of light around his head reflecting his saintliness. There is a book, thus indicating his condition as an apostle, and perhaps an intellectual or philosopher. On closer inspection, however, there is an inscription in the top left of the painting clearly identifying the figure as S. PAVLVS (Saint Paul). This work was painted by a young Velázquez who had not yet left Seville to enter into the service of Phillip IV in Madrid.
