Here we have an important example of Early Gothic Catalan painting, the most widely preserved with profane subject matters, which narrates the conquest of Majorca by Jaime I the Conqueror.

Discovered and stripped in 1961, the Conquest of Majorca wall paintings are a marvellous example of painting with a historic subject matter, narrating as they do the conquest of the island of Majorca in 1229. It is as if we were contemplating a painted chronicle of the Battle of Portopí, Jaime I’s encampment and the attack on the city of Majorca, based on detailed narration to be found in the Catalan Medieval chronicles, such as the Llibre dels Feits del rey Jaime I and the Crònica de Bernat Desclot.
